Chinese Mainland Opposes Lai Ching-te’s U.S. Stopover, Reaffirms Taiwan’s Status as Part of China

A Chinese mainland spokesperson has expressed firm opposition to Lai Ching-te’s recent U.S. “stopover” during his trip to Pacific nations which maintain so-called “diplomatic allies” with the Taiwan region.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized on Sunday that regardless of the tactics employed by Lai and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan to advance their “Taiwan secession” agenda, they cannot alter the firm international commitment to the one-China principle, nor can they halt the overarching historical trend toward China’s reunification.

On Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian reiterated China’s stance, stating that China firmly opposes any form of official interaction between the United States and the Taiwan region. He condemned any U.S. actions that aid or abet secessionist activities in Taiwan, underscoring that such moves undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

The Chinese mainland maintains that Taiwan is an integral part of China based on historical and legal facts. The timelines of history highlight the consistent assertion of sovereignty over Taiwan by successive Chinese governments, and international agreements affirm this position.
