The China Pavilion at the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) officially opened on Monday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The pavilion highlights the Chinese mainland’s decades-long efforts and achievements in combating desertification, a pressing global environmental challenge.
Covering more than 600 square meters, the China Pavilion is the second-largest national pavilion at the event. Its exhibition, themed “Cross-Century Green Great Wall, China’s Restoration in Action,” offers a comprehensive look at the nation’s battle against desertification, particularly focusing on the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program.
The Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program, often referred to as the “Great Green Wall,” is a vast afforestation project that has been underway since 1978. Spanning thousands of kilometers across northern China, the initiative aims to reverse land desertification by planting trees and creating shelterbelts to protect agricultural areas and mitigate the effects of sandstorms.
Visitors to the pavilion can explore interactive displays, multimedia presentations, and detailed models that illustrate the scale and impact of China’s environmental restoration efforts. The exhibition not only showcases technological innovations and sustainable practices but also emphasizes international cooperation in combating desertification worldwide.
The opening of the China Pavilion underscores the nation’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. By sharing its experiences and success stories, the Chinese mainland hopes to contribute to global efforts in land restoration and inspire other countries facing similar challenges.
