China Pavilion Showcases Decades of Desertification Combat at UN Conference in Riyadh

The China Pavilion at the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) officially opened on Monday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, highlighting China’s decades-long efforts and achievements in combating desertification.

Covering more than 600 square meters, the China Pavilion is the second-largest national pavilion at the event. Its exhibition, themed “Cross-Century Green Great Wall, China’s Restoration in Action,” showcases the nation’s battle against desertification, particularly through the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program, a major national initiative aimed at reversing land desertification.

Visitors to the pavilion can explore interactive displays and multimedia presentations that illustrate how China has combated desertification over the years. The Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program, often referred to as the “Green Great Wall,” is one of the world’s largest ecological projects, spanning over 4,480 kilometers across the northern regions of China.

Since its inception in 1978, the program has contributed significantly to reducing sandstorms, improving soil conditions, and enhancing biodiversity. The pavilion aims to share China’s experiences and innovations in land restoration with the international community, fostering collaboration in the global fight against desertification.

The UNCCD COP16 brings together representatives from around the world to address the pressing issues of land degradation and desertification, which affect the livelihoods of millions and have significant implications for global sustainability.
