China is taking significant strides to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) education into its primary and secondary schools, aiming to equip the next generation with skills essential for the emerging technology era. The Ministry of Education has announced a comprehensive plan to cultivate creativity, scientific interest, and digital proficiency among students from an early age.
According to a recent circular, schools across the nation are encouraged to develop tailored curricula that incorporate AI into everyday teaching. This initiative emphasizes hands-on experience, allowing young learners to interact directly with AI technologies in their early primary years. As students advance, the focus shifts to understanding and applying AI concepts, culminating in the creation of AI projects and exploration of cutting-edge applications in senior high school.
To support this educational transformation, an AI section will be added to the national smart education platform, pooling quality resources and making them widely accessible. The ministry also plans to foster collaborations between schools and higher education institutions, research centers, and tech companies. These organizations will open their AI labs and exhibition halls to students, providing unique opportunities for real-world learning.
Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng described AI as a “gold key” for the education system, highlighting its potential to reshape learning experiences while acknowledging the challenges it presents. Earlier this year, China selected 184 schools as pilot bases to pioneer new philosophies, models, and programs in AI education. The success of these pilots is intended to lay the groundwork for broader implementation across the country.
