In a spirited event at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, Peng Liyuan, World Health Organization (WHO) Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, urged young people to intensify their involvement in AIDS prevention efforts ahead of the 2024 World AIDS Day.
Peng, who is also a renowned advocate for public health, presented a flag to a student representative of AIDS prevention volunteers. This symbolic gesture underscored the pivotal role of youth in combating the epidemic. “Your enthusiasm and dedication are the driving force behind our fight against AIDS,” she affirmed, encouraging students to leverage their influence to promote awareness and education within their communities.
The event showcased China’s advancements in AIDS prevention, highlighting success stories and progress achieved in recent years. Through interactive sessions—including classroom discussions, theatrical performances, and engaging interviews—participants gained deeper insights into prevention strategies and the significant impact of volunteer programs within universities.
Students shared personal experiences and displayed creative campaigns designed to educate their peers about HIV/AIDS. These initiatives not only fostered a supportive environment but also emphasized the importance of destigmatizing the conversation around the disease.
Peng emphasized that the youth are at the forefront of shaping a future free from AIDS. “By spreading knowledge and compassion, you can make a meaningful difference,” she encouraged. She called upon them to continue their vital work, stressing that collective action is essential in overcoming the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS.
As the world prepares to observe World AIDS Day, the event served as a reminder of the power of youth engagement in public health initiatives. It highlighted the collective responsibility to educate, support, and inspire communities to join the fight against AIDS.
