The Chinese mainland has witnessed a groundbreaking achievement as the world’s first commercial liquefied carbon dioxide (CO₂) carrier, the “Northern Pioneer,” was delivered to an overseas client on Friday in Dalian City, northeast China’s Liaoning Province.
Independently designed and constructed by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, the vessel marks a significant milestone in maritime engineering and environmental sustainability. Measuring approximately 130 meters in length and 21.2 meters in width, the “Northern Pioneer” boasts the capacity to transport 7,500 cubic meters of liquefied CO₂ in a single voyage.
What sets this carrier apart is its utilization of liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel technology, aligning with the most stringent global energy efficiency design standards. This innovation not only enhances the vessel’s operational efficiency but also underscores its commitment to environmentally friendly practices, positioning it at the forefront of international maritime innovation.
“This ship is the first of its kind in the world,” shared Gai Yong, project manager at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd., in an interview with China Media Group. “It features a newly developed steel plate material for the cargo tanks and represents a pioneering design and construction of a liquefied cargo system.”
Gai highlighted that the incorporation of multiple energy-saving and environmentally conscious designs presented significant construction challenges. However, overcoming these obstacles has allowed the “Northern Pioneer” to pave the way for advancements in the carbon transport industry, setting new standards for future vessels.
The successful delivery of the “Northern Pioneer” not only signifies China’s growing prowess in high-end shipbuilding but also contributes to global efforts in carbon capture and storage (CCS), aiding in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the promotion of sustainable development worldwide.
