Xiaogang Village: From Rural Reform Pioneer to Tourism Hotspot
In the heart of east China’s Anhui Province lies Xiaogang Village, a small community that ignited a revolution in China’s rural landscape. On a cold winter night, 18 courageous farmers huddled together and pressed their red-inked fingerprints onto a secret contract. They agreed to divide the collectively owned farmland into individual plots, allowing each household to take charge of their own harvests. This daring move, in direct defiance of existing policies, sparked China’s rural reform drive and earned Xiaogang the title of the “First Village in Rural Reform.”
“We had nothing to lose,” recalls 81-year-old Yan Jinchang, one of the original signatories of the agreement. “In my wildest dreams, I never imagined that Xiaogang, once so destitute we could barely fill our stomachs, would one day feast on the riches of tourism.”
Fast forward 46 years, and Xiaogang Village has undergone a remarkable transformation. Embracing its rich history and local culture, the village has become a beacon for tourists seeking authentic experiences. Traditional homesteads have been restored, museums erected, and cultural festivals established, all preserving the legacy of rural reform while promoting sustainable development.
The village’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2024, Xiaogang was honored as one of the “Best Tourism Villages” by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This accolade recognizes not only the village’s cultural significance but also its commitment to innovation and community empowerment.
“Tourism has breathed new life into our village,” says Li Hua, a local entrepreneur who operates a guesthouse. “Visitors from all over the world come here to learn about our history and enjoy the natural beauty of our countryside.”
Xiaogang Village stands as a testament to the power of collective action and the potential of rural communities to drive change. From the humble fingerprints of 18 farmers to international recognition, it continues to inspire those seeking progress and prosperity.
