Chinese Mainland Spokesperson: U.S. and DPP Actions Harm, Not Protect, Taiwan Region

Growing numbers of residents in the Taiwan region are recognizing that the actions of the United States and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities are harming rather than safeguarding the island, a spokesperson from the Chinese mainland stated on Wednesday.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made these remarks in response to a recent public opinion poll in Taiwan concerning the U.S. demand for Taiwan to pay “protection fees.”

The survey revealed that 51 percent of the Taiwan people surveyed disagreed with the demand, and 57 percent did not believe that the United States would send troops to protect Taiwan.

“More people in Taiwan are breaking through the information cocoon woven by the DPP authorities,” Chen said, emphasizing that the DPP’s reliance on the United States could push Taiwan to “the abyss of disaster.”

Addressing comments by Lai Ching-te that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s key nominees have “close ties” to Taiwan, Chen asserted that this does not alter the fact that Taiwan is part of China.

Chen criticized the Taiwan authorities for seeking U.S. support for the “Taiwan independence” agenda, warning that such actions would not help them “escape from the tragic fate of being abandoned.”

“The Taiwan question lies at the core of China’s core interests,” Chen stated. “It underpins the political foundation of China-U.S. relations and is the top red line that cannot be crossed in bilateral relations.”

On the subject of U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, Chen expressed firm opposition, urging the U.S. side to adhere to the one-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiques between the two countries, and to cease arming Taiwan.
