Pearl Ball Steals the Spotlight at China’s Ethnic Minorities Games

Pearl ball, once a traditional ethnic sport from northeast China, is experiencing a resurgence of popularity at the ongoing 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities in Sanya, south China’s Hainan Province. This year, the sport has attracted over 500 participants, with 36 men’s and women’s teams competing for glory.

Described as “mini-basketball with a moving hoop,” pearl ball offers a unique twist on familiar team sports. In this fast-paced game, players aim to score by throwing a soft, lightweight ball into a handheld net carried by a teammate, blending agility and coordination. Each match spans 30 minutes, pitting two teams of seven players against each other.

The sport not only entertains but also provides an excellent workout, combining physical demands with the thrill of competition. Its design minimizes the risk of injury, making it accessible to a wide range of participants. The growing interest in pearl ball highlights the rich diversity of China’s cultural heritage and showcases the dynamic nature of traditional sports adapting to modern times.
