Expert Urges Smart CT Scan Follow-Ups for Pulmonary Nodules

On Saturday, at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Cancer Foundation of China, Doctor Zhi Xiuyi, deputy secretary general of the foundation, emphasized the importance of scientific follow-ups for patients diagnosed with pulmonary nodules.

“Pulmonary nodules require careful monitoring, but more isn’t always better,” Dr. Zhi remarked during his address. “If your doctor recommends a follow-up in a year, don’t insist on having one in six months.”

Computed axial tomography scans, commonly known as CT scans, are vital medical imaging techniques that offer detailed internal images of the body. While they play a crucial role in detecting and monitoring pulmonary nodules, Dr. Zhi cautioned against undergoing them too frequently.

“Excessive CT scans may expose patients to unnecessary radiation, which can be harmful,” he explained. “It’s essential to balance the need for monitoring with the potential risks of radiation exposure.”

For patients seeking expert consultations, Dr. Zhi advised undergoing thin-slice CT scans at the same hospital. “Having all your data in one place allows doctors to access more high-quality images—upwards of 200 images—which is incredibly helpful for accurate diagnosis, especially for small nodules,” he said.

Pulmonary nodules are small growths in the lungs that can be benign or indicative of more serious conditions. Regular monitoring is critical, but as Dr. Zhi emphasized, it should be guided by medical advice tailored to each patient’s specific situation.

“Trust your healthcare providers,” he urged. “They base their recommendations on your individual needs and the latest medical guidelines.”

As lung health continues to be a significant concern, particularly in Asia where air quality issues prevail, Dr. Zhi’s insights highlight the importance of informed decision-making and adherence to professional medical advice.
