China Urges U.S. to Safeguard Drug-Control Cooperation

In a recent statement, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of preserving the positive momentum in China-U.S. cooperation on drug control. Speaking on Tuesday, the spokesperson urged the United States to value China’s goodwill and work together to safeguard the hard-won achievements in counter-narcotics efforts between the two nations.

The remarks came after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced intentions to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on all Chinese imports. Despite rising tensions, China continues to advocate for collaboration, particularly in areas of mutual concern such as drug control.

“China is one of the world’s toughest countries on counter-narcotics, both in terms of policy and its implementation,” the spokesperson noted. Highlighting the global impact of the opioid crisis, the spokesperson underscored China’s proactive measures in combating illicit substances.

Addressing the issue of fentanyl—a potent synthetic opioid contributing to a significant number of overdose deaths in the U.S.—the spokesperson stated, “Considering that fentanyl is an issue for the U.S., China, in the spirit of humanity, has given support to the U.S. response to this issue.” The spokesperson reminded that “as early as 2019, China officially scheduled all fentanyl-related substances and is the first country in the world ever to do so,” signifying China’s commitment to international drug control cooperation.

China has engaged in extensive and in-depth counter-narcotics collaboration with the U.S., which has yielded productive results. The spokesperson reaffirmed China’s readiness to continue these efforts on the basis of equality, mutual benefit, and mutual respect.

“We hope the U.S. will work with China to enhance cooperation and jointly tackle the challenges posed by drug trafficking and abuse,” the spokesperson concluded, expressing optimism for the future of bilateral relations in this critical area.
