China-Samoa cooperation has left its footprints everywhere in Samoa, according to Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry. Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Mao highlighted that the visit of Samoa’s Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa to China is an opportunity to build an even closer community with a shared future between China and Pacific Island countries.
Mao noted that Samoa was one of the first Pacific Island countries to establish diplomatic relations with New China and to sign the Memorandum of Understanding on Belt and Road cooperation with China. She emphasized significant projects that symbolize the strong ties between the two nations, such as the renovation of Faleolo International Airport by a Chinese company, which has become one of the most modern international airports in the South Pacific. Additionally, the China-aided government building, depicted on Samoa’s new banknotes, has become a popular spot for locals to visit and take photos.
“The friendly ties between China and Samoa epitomize China’s cooperation with Pacific Island countries,” Mao stated. She added that China develops its relations with Pacific Island countries under the principle of respecting their sovereignty and independence, their will, cultural traditions, and their efforts to seek strength through unity. China provides economic and technological aid with no political strings attached.
Mao highlighted that China has made active efforts to support Pacific Island countries in implementing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. China has built new platforms according to their national conditions and continues to explore new areas for cooperation. She emphasized that China will continue to carry out all-round cooperation with Pacific Island countries to support their development.
The visit of Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa marks a significant step in strengthening the partnership between China and Samoa, showcasing the mutual commitment to shared growth and development in the region.
