China Advocates ‘Common but Differentiated Responsibilities’ at COP29 in Baku

After more than 30 hours of extended negotiations, the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) concluded on Sunday morning in Baku, Azerbaijan, achieving a significant milestone with the agreement on a new financial goal to support developing countries in their fight against climate change.

China’s delegation played a pivotal role in the conference, calling on all parties to uphold multilateralism and to adhere to the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities.” The delegation emphasized the necessity of preventing any backsliding on the commitments established under the Paris Agreement, urging developed nations to fulfill their financial and technological support obligations.

Throughout the climate talks, Chinese delegates actively engaged in negotiations and consultations on a range of critical issues. Their constructive participation and leadership contributed significantly to the success of the conference, fostering collaboration and consensus among participating nations.

The conclusion of COP29 marks a hopeful step forward in global climate action, particularly for developing countries that require additional support to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. The commitments made in Baku are expected to enhance international cooperation and drive collective efforts toward a more sustainable and resilient future.
