Chinese President Xi Jinping returned to Beijing on Saturday morning after an 11-day journey that solidified global partnerships and promoted development. His participation in the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, the 19th G20 Summit, and state visits to Peru and Brazil were hailed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as a “journey of solidarity” and a “journey of cooperation to expand partnership.”
During this extensive trip, President Xi attended nearly 40 bilateral and multilateral events and witnessed the signing of over 60 cooperation documents. “From Lima to Rio de Janeiro, President Xi sent a clear message of firmly upholding multilateralism at the crossroads of human history,” Foreign Minister Wang Yi noted. “He illuminated the ‘Latin American moment’ of global governance with Chinese wisdom and demonstrated China’s image as a responsible major country with fairness, justice, courage, openness, and inclusiveness.”
Advocating Multilateralism at APEC in Lima
At the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, President Xi delivered a written speech to the CEO summit, calling on Asia-Pacific economies to adhere to true multilateralism. He urged for the building of an open and interconnected paradigm for Asia-Pacific cooperation, emphasized making green innovation a catalyst for the region, and promoted a universally beneficial and inclusive vision for Asia-Pacific development.
Promoting Global Governance at G20 in Rio de Janeiro
During the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, President Xi elaborated on China’s concept of global governance in a comprehensive and systematic manner. He stressed the need to make global development more inclusive, beneficial to all, and resilient, aiming to build a just world of common development. Xi called for a world economy characterized by cooperation, stability, openness, innovation, and eco-friendliness.
Significantly, President Xi announced China’s eight actions for global development, including joining the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. “These important initiatives respond to the strong will of the Global South to seek equality and promote change, defining the right direction for improving global governance,” Wang Yi commented.
Strengthening Ties with Peru and Brazil
A key highlight of President Xi’s visit to Peru was his joint attendance, via video link, of the opening ceremony of Chancay Port with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte. Chancay Port, once completed, will be the first smart and green port in South America, bringing significant revenues to Peru and contributing to establishing a new Asia-Latin America land-sea corridor.
In Brazil, President Xi engaged in in-depth and amicable strategic communication with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The leaders agreed that the China-Brazil relationship is at its best in history. The two countries announced an elevation of their ties to a community with a shared future for a more just world and a more sustainable planet, deciding to establish synergies between the Belt and Road Initiative and Brazil’s development strategies. “President Xi’s visit is an important milestone in the history of China-Brazil relations,” Wang Yi stated.
Engaging with Global Leaders
On the sidelines of the multilateral gatherings, President Xi held more than 10 bilateral meetings. In his meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, the two heads of state emphasized the great importance of China-U.S. relations, noting that a stable relationship is critical not only to the interests of both peoples but also to the future and destiny of humanity. President Xi reiterated China’s principles and positions on major issues, urging both sides to shoulder the responsibilities of major countries, explore the right way to coexist, and inject more certainty and positive energy into the world.
President Xi also met with leaders from France, Germany, Britain, and other European countries, stressing that China and Europe should view each other from a long-term and strategic perspective. He emphasized adhering to partnership, committing to resolving differences through dialogue and consultation, and continuing to write cooperative stories of mutual achievement.
Promoting High-Quality Development
Throughout his trip, President Xi elaborated on China’s important measures to promote high-quality development and high-level opening up through talks, meetings, public addresses, written speeches, and signed articles. He welcomed all parties to grow together with the Chinese economy and work collaboratively towards the modernization of all countries featuring peaceful development, mutually beneficial cooperation, and common prosperity.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi concluded that President Xi’s journey once again showcased China’s commitment to multilateralism and global cooperation, highlighting the nation’s role as a responsible major country on the world stage.
