China Urges Political Resolution for Iranian Nuclear Issue at IAEA Meeting

China has called for a political and diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue, urging all relevant parties to approach the situation with calm and responsibility. Speaking at a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors on Thursday, Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the IAEA, emphasized the need for constructive efforts to promote a practical settlement.

“China urges relevant parties to view the situation of the Iranian nuclear issue in a calm and responsible manner and to take practical steps,” Li stated, highlighting China’s commitment to facilitating dialogue and cooperation.

The meeting saw Germany, France, the UK, and the U.S. pushing for a new resolution to pressure Iran. However, China, Russia, and Burkina Faso voted against the resolution, while 12 developing countries including South Africa, India, and Egypt abstained, reflecting a division among IAEA members on how to address the issue.

Li welcomed the recent cooperation between Iran and the IAEA on safeguarding outstanding issues. He praised the positive interactions between IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and Iranian officials during his recent visit to Iran, noting the constructive progress made.

“Facts have repeatedly proved that artificially creating confrontation and intensifying contradictions in the Board of Governors will not solve the issue but will worsen the cooperation between the IAEA and Iran,” Li warned, urging against actions that could further complicate the situation.

He added, “Pressure is not diplomacy, and confrontation cannot solve the Iranian nuclear issue.” Li underscored that the fundamental solution lies in political and diplomatic efforts and constructive cooperation on multilateral platforms.

Noting that the 2015 nuclear deal was seriously undermined a few years ago, Li called for renewed commitment from all parties to restore and implement the agreement effectively.
