As anticipation builds for the 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities of China, CBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Abdusalam Abdurexit of the Xinjiang Flying Tigers shares his passion for ethnic sports that connect deeply with nature.
Speaking with CGTN Sports Scene’s Damion Jones, Abdusalam expressed his excitement for the Games, which will officially open on Friday night in Sanya, south China’s Hainan Province.
“Actually, ethnic sports activities are quite natural, such as wrestling and horse riding,” Abdusalam said. “I have personally participated in many of these activities, including wrestling. In my hometown of Altay, where the snow season is long, we often play football and wrestle in the snow. And this past summer, when I went on a road trip, I rode horses as well.”
The National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities showcase competitions rooted in the traditional customs of China’s diverse ethnic groups. Unlike conventional sporting events, these games emphasize a harmonious relationship with nature and community.
“I think these sports are more connected to nature, without the constraints of specific venues or rigid rules, which I believe is really great,” Abdusalam added.
Some events, such as equestrian competitions, have already taken place in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The Games not only celebrate athletic prowess but also promote cultural exchange and unity among China’s ethnic minorities. For athletes like Abdusalam, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with their roots and inspire others to appreciate the natural beauty and traditions of their homeland.
