The Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has firmly opposed external interference in the region’s judicial matters. On Thursday, a spokesperson from the office stated unwavering support for HKSAR judicial authorities in prosecuting actions that endanger national security, emphasizing that attempts by external forces to interfere are futile.
“Overgeneralizing and abusing the concept of national security, the United States and a few other countries have openly shielded and beautified criminals,” the spokesperson said. “Their repeated acts of coercion and intimidation have never shaken the will and determination of the HKSAR to safeguard national security according to law.”
The spokesperson highlighted the case involving Benny Tai Yiu-ting and other defendants, who were accused of organizing a “conspiracy to subvert state power” through an illegal “primary election.” Describing it as an organized, premeditated, consensual, and large-scale criminal activity aimed at subverting state power, the spokesperson underscored the seriousness of the offenses.
The Central Government remains committed to fully and accurately implementing the principle of “one country, two systems,” the spokesperson added. “We will unswervingly support the HKSAR in implementing the national security law in Hong Kong and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance.”
The firm stance of the Central Government sends a clear message that Hong Kong’s judicial affairs are an internal matter, and external interference will not be tolerated.
