In a landmark move, China and Brazil have elevated their relationship by establishing a China-Brazil community with a shared future aimed at creating a more just world and a more sustainable planet. The announcement was made on Wednesday in Brasília, following the signing of a joint statement by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Marking 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, both leaders acknowledged that China-Brazil relations have withstood the test of a changing international landscape. Over the decades, the partnership between the two nations has maintained a positive and progressive momentum.
In 1993, Brazil distinguished itself as the first developing country to establish a strategic partnership with China. This relationship deepened in 2012 when Brazil became the first Latin American country to form a comprehensive strategic partnership with China. Under the strategic guidance of their leaders, China-Brazil relations are now at their historical best, serving as a model for the Global South and other major developing countries.
Brazil reaffirmed its commitment to the one-China principle, recognizing that there is only one China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. It emphasized that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the entirety of China. Furthermore, Brazil expressed support for China’s efforts in promoting national rejuvenation through Chinese modernization.
Looking ahead, the two nations agreed to designate 2026 as the China-Brazil Year of Culture. This initiative aims to strengthen cultural ties and enhance mutual understanding between their peoples, fostering deeper connections and collaboration.
