Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — On the sidelines of the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday, underlining the importance of viewing and developing China-Germany relations from a long-term and strategic perspective.
Amid the bustling atmosphere of global leaders converging for the summit, Xi and Scholz’s meeting highlighted the deepening ties between the two nations. Reflecting on Chancellor Scholz’s visit to China in April, Xi noted that the past months have seen candid, in-depth, and fruitful discussions leading to notable achievements in cooperation.
“Our collaborations in green development, sustainable transportation, and agricultural projects in Africa are testaments to the strength and vitality of our bilateral relations,” Xi remarked. He emphasized that as the second- and third-largest economies globally, China and Germany hold significant influence and share a responsibility to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Xi stressed China’s consistent and stable policy toward Germany, expressing willingness to work together based on mutual respect for each other’s core interests and major concerns. “By seeking common ground while reserving differences, we can promote mutual learning and drive forward our shared goals,” he said.
Highlighting the deep economic interdependence between the two countries, Xi stated that their cooperation presents opportunities for shared development and a jointly created future. “China regards Germany as an important partner in advancing Chinese modernization and will continue to provide German companies with broad market opportunities,” he assured.
The leaders discussed focusing on digitalization, intelligent technologies, and low-carbon development to upgrade and enhance their cooperation. They also explored the potential of jointly tapping into third-party markets to achieve mutual benefits and win-win results.
Xi reaffirmed China’s view of Europe as a significant pole in a multipolar world, expressing commitment to collaborating with European nations to address global challenges. “We aim to promote the stable and healthy development of relations between China and Europe,” he added.
Addressing recent trade tensions, Xi touched upon the European Union’s decision to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. “China remains committed to resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation,” he stated, expressing hope that Germany will continue to play a key role in fostering constructive discussions within the EU.
Chancellor Scholz echoed the importance of their bilateral relationship, acknowledging the mutual benefits that stem from continued cooperation. The meeting concluded with both leaders expressing optimism for the future of China-Germany ties, setting a positive tone for ongoing collaborations.
