Xi and Macron Pen Prefaces for Paris Tang Dynasty Exhibition

Paris has become a hub of cultural exchange as Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron penned prefaces for the exhibition “Tang China – A Cosmopolitan Dynasty (7th-10th Century),” which opened on Monday at the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts.

This significant event coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France. President Xi highlighted the importance of this milestone, recalling that during his visit to France in May, both nations agreed to hold this exhibition showcasing artifacts from the Tang Dynasty.

“I am delighted to see the exhibition opening as scheduled, thanks to the joint efforts of cultural relics experts from both countries,” Xi expressed. He described the Tang Dynasty as one of China’s most prosperous eras, marked by economic vitality, cultural richness, intellectual openness, remarkable artistic achievements, and ethnic integration. Its cultural influence spanned across Asia and extended to Europe through the Silk Road, leaving a legacy admired to this day.

President Xi voiced confidence that the exhibition would provide French and European audiences with a vivid understanding of the Tang Dynasty’s brilliance and the unique charm of Chinese civilization. He emphasized the long-standing history and splendid cultures of both China and France, noting their mutual appreciation and ancient friendly exchanges.

He called for drawing inspiration from history and culture to deepen people-to-people exchanges, promote mutual learning, and enhance cooperation in cultural heritage protection. “By treasuring our own beautiful cultures and sharing what is different but equally beautiful, we can integrate historical sentiments with contemporary spirits into Chinese-French friendship,” Xi said, advocating for a more solid and vibrant comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.

President Macron, in his preface, highlighted the significance of the exhibition in celebrating the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations and the Year of Culture and Tourism. He noted that the Tang Dynasty holds a special place in Chinese civilization, renowned for its brilliant culture and incredible creative vitality.

“The Tang Dynasty witnessed active foreign exchanges through the Silk Road, producing a stunning array of artistic treasures,” Macron remarked. He underscored that this historically significant exhibition highlights the dynamic cultural exchanges between France and China, which will continue to play an important role in strengthening bilateral relations.

The exhibition, directed by China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration and the French Ministry of Culture, features over 200 exquisite artifacts from 32 cultural and museum institutions across 10 regions and cities in China. Visitors to the Guimet Museum can explore a rich collection that showcases the Tang Dynasty’s artistic achievements and its cosmopolitan spirit.

This event not only commemorates decades of diplomatic ties but also reinforces the ongoing cultural dialogue between China and France. It offers a unique opportunity for audiences to experience the historical grandeur of the Tang Dynasty and reflects a shared commitment to preserving and appreciating cultural heritage.
