Xi Jinping Unveils Eight Actions for Global Development at G20 Summit

Rio de Janeiro, November 18, 2024 — Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the first session of the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, emphasizing the importance of building a just world through common development. In his speech titled "Building a Just World of Common Development", Xi outlined China’s commitment to global poverty reduction and sustainable growth.

Highlighting the unprecedented challenges and opportunities faced by humanity, Xi called on world leaders to view the world as one community with a shared future. He stressed the need for more inclusive global development, stating that prosperity and stability are unattainable if the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen.

China’s Eight Actions for Global Development

President Xi announced eight key actions that China will implement to support global development:

  1. Pursuing High-Quality Belt and Road Cooperation: China will advance the development of a multidimensional connectivity network, focusing on a green Silk Road and empowering a digital Silk Road, supported by additional financing.
  2. Implementing the Global Development Initiative: Building on over 1,100 projects, China will utilize development funds to support poverty reduction, food security, and the digital economy in developing countries.
  3. Supporting Development in Africa: Following commitments made at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China will provide significant financial support to assist Africa in advancing modernization.
  4. Enhancing International Cooperation on Poverty Reduction and Food Security: China has decided to join the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty and will continue hosting international conferences on food loss and waste.
  5. Promoting Open Science: In collaboration with Brazil, South Africa, and the African Union, China proposes an initiative to help the Global South access advancements in science, technology, and innovation.
  6. Supporting G20 Practical Cooperation: China backs G20 initiatives that benefit the Global South, aiming to bridge the North-South gap through inclusive economic globalization.
  7. Implementing the G20 Anti-Corruption Action Plan: China will enhance cooperation with developing countries in anti-corruption efforts, including asset recovery and capacity building.
  8. Advancing High-Standard Opening Up: China will unilaterally open its markets wider to the least developed countries, aiming to import over US$8 trillion from developing nations by 2030.

China’s Commitment to Poverty Alleviation

Xi highlighted China’s success in lifting 800 million people out of poverty, meeting the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development ahead of schedule. He emphasized that this achievement is a result of unified efforts and targeted policies tailored to local conditions, showcasing that developing countries can overcome poverty with determination and perseverance.

A Call for Global Cooperation

Concluding his speech, President Xi urged all parties to work together to build a just world where common development prevails. He expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with other nations in turning this vision into reality, leaving poverty behind, and fostering a sustainable future for all.
