Burundi Seeks Trade Boost at China International Import Expo Debut

Burundi is stepping onto the global trade stage as it participates for the first time in the China International Import Expo (CIIE), held in Shanghai from November 5-10. As the world’s first national-level expo dedicated solely to imports, CIIE provides an unprecedented platform for countries like Burundi to showcase their unique products to a vast marketplace.

Alfred Burimaso, First Counselor at the Embassy of Burundi in China, expressed enthusiasm about this opportunity. “This is the first time that Burundi is participating in the country exhibition of the CIIE,” he noted. “We are seizing this moment to present our rich array of products and to strengthen economic ties with China and the world.”

Burundi’s participation comes at a pivotal time, leveraging China’s zero-tariff policy for least-developed countries. This policy significantly lowers barriers for African exporters entering the Chinese market. “China’s commitment to opening up benefits the world,” Burimaso emphasized. “The zero-tariff policy enables us to bring Burundi’s unique offerings to Chinese consumers, fostering mutual growth.”

The CIIE serves as a unique platform for African businesses to be noticed. With thousands of exhibitors and buyers from across the globe, the expo creates opportunities for partnerships and market expansion. “The advantages of CIIE’s vast marketplace cannot be overstated,” Burimaso said. “It provides us with direct access to a huge consumer base and potential investors.”

By participating in the CIIE, Burundi aims to enhance its visibility on the international stage and to attract investment in key sectors. The country’s delegation is showcasing products ranging from coffee and tea to artisanal crafts. “We are not just here to sell products; we are here to build lasting economic relationships,” Burimaso added.

Burimaso believes that such international expos are crucial for least-developed countries seeking economic advancement. “CIIE provides a platform where we can engage directly with global markets,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to tell our story, share our culture, and highlight the potential that Burundi holds.”

As Burundi embarks on this new chapter of economic cooperation, its debut at the CIIE symbolizes a broader commitment to global trade and partnership. Through active participation, Burundi hopes to not only boost its trade but also to contribute to the shared prosperity promised by China’s opening-up policies.
