President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden Hold Talks in Lima

President Xi Jinping met with U.S. President Joe Biden in Lima on the afternoon of November 16, during which they discussed the importance of fostering a positive relationship between China and the United States. President Xi emphasized the need for the two major countries to explore the right way to coexist harmoniously.

“China-U.S. relations over the past four years have experienced ups and downs,” Xi noted. “However, through our joint efforts, we have engaged in fruitful dialogue and cooperation, maintaining overall stability in our relationship.”

Xi highlighted that the trajectory of China-U.S. relations over the past 45 years has validated the importance of treating each other as partners and friends, seeking common ground while setting aside differences, and supporting each other’s success. “When we view each other as rivals or adversaries and engage in vicious competition, it not only disrupts our relationship but can also set it back,” he warned.

Addressing the unprecedented challenges facing humanity in a turbulent world fraught with conflicts and compounded issues, President Xi stated that major-country competition should not be the underlying logic of the times. “Only solidarity and cooperation can help humanity overcome current difficulties,” he stressed.

Xi also pointed out that in an era marked by a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, neither decoupling nor supply-chain disruption is a viable solution. “Only mutually beneficial cooperation can lead to common development,” he asserted.

He criticized the notion of pursuing a “small yard, high fences” approach, suggesting that openness and sharing are essential for advancing the well-being of humanity. “As two major countries, China and the United States should keep in mind the interests of the whole world and inject more certainty and positive energy into this turbulent world,” Xi added.

President Xi underscored his consistent belief that a stable China-U.S. relationship, which he described as the world’s most important bilateral relationship, is crucial not only for the peoples of both nations but also for the future of all humanity. He urged both sides to consider the well-being of their peoples and the common interests of the international community.

“We should make wise choices, continue exploring the right way for two major countries to get along, and realize long-term peaceful coexistence on this planet,” Xi said.

Referring to the recent U.S. election, Xi emphasized that China’s goal of maintaining a stable, healthy, and sustainable China-U.S. relationship remains unchanged. He reiterated China’s commitment to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation as guiding principles for handling relations with the United States.

“China’s position of resolutely safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and development interests remains unchanged,” he stated, expressing China’s desire to carry forward the traditional friendship between the Chinese and American peoples.

“China is ready to work with the U.S. government to maintain dialogue, expand cooperation, and manage differences,” Xi concluded. “This will help us strive for a steady transition of the China-U.S. relationship for the benefit of both peoples.”
