Peruvians Embrace China, Eye Closer Ties in Global South Cooperation

Peru and China, despite the vast Pacific Ocean between them, are finding themselves closer than ever. A recent survey reveals that Peruvians hold overwhelmingly positive views towards China, signaling a strengthening bond that could shape future cooperation among Global South countries.

The survey, titled “Peru’s Favorability towards China in 2024,” was conducted by CGTN in collaboration with the New Era International Communication Research Institute and the Center for Advanced National Studies of Peru. Presented during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Peru, it gathered responses from 1,111 Peruvians, marking the first time such a comprehensive study was undertaken between the two nations.

The findings were resoundingly positive:

  • 89.6% of respondents have a favorable impression of China.
  • 97.7% believe that China is an important country.
  • 97.2% view China as a successful country.
  • 91.5% consider China an attractive country.
  • 91.2% believe China is worthy of respect.
  • 94% are eager to travel, visit, or study in China, with this figure rising to 95.9% among young adults aged 18 to 24.

These numbers highlight the deepening ties and mutual admiration between the two nations. Peru was one of the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China and to forge a comprehensive strategic partnership. The longstanding friendship is anchored in sincerity, mutual trust, and a commitment to common development.

Respondents expressed hope for building a “Peruvian model” for China-Latin America relations, emphasizing the desire for high-level cooperation among Global South countries. This model aims to enhance economic and trade partnerships, cultural exchanges, and collaborative efforts on the global stage.

The survey results underscore the potential for Peru and China to deepen their collaboration, fostering a stronger alliance that extends beyond their trans-oceanic friendship. As Peruvians express optimism and enthusiasm towards China, the foundation is set for a new chapter in bilateral relations that could influence the dynamics of cooperation in the Global South.
