Global Martial Artists Aim High at Zhengzhou Shaolin Wushu Grading

At the 13th Zhengzhou International Shaolin Wushu Competition, a group of 33 dedicated athletes from 10 countries gathered to take part in the prestigious Shaolin Wushu Duanwei grading examination. For these martial artists, the exam represents more than a test—it’s a culmination of years of discipline, practice, and a deep commitment to the ancient art of Shaolin Wushu.

Recognition at the elementary level demands at least three years of systematic training. Candidates must demonstrate not only their physical prowess but also a foundational understanding of wushu techniques. However, for those aiming for advanced levels, the bar is set even higher. These applicants are required to showcase significant achievements in wushu theory and philosophy, reflecting a profound grasp of the art’s spiritual and cultural dimensions. Moreover, they must have made notable contributions to the development of wushu, signifying their role in promoting and preserving this martial heritage.

CGTN host Sergey Gordeev met with several of these international athletes to delve into their personal journeys and aspirations. Through their stories, a common thread of passion and perseverance emerges. Each athlete brings a unique background, yet all share the same goal: to honor the tradition of Shaolin Wushu and attain a level of mastery recognized by this esteemed grading system.

As the examination unfolds, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation. The athletes perform intricate routines, displaying fluid movements that blend strength, agility, and precision. Judges assess not only the technical execution but also the embodiment of the wushu spirit—a harmony of body and mind.

For the global audience, the event highlights the universal appeal of martial arts and the way it bridges cultures. The dedication of these international practitioners underscores the dynamic role of Shaolin Wushu in today’s world, transcending borders and inspiring new generations to engage with Asia’s rich cultural legacy.
