Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has marked a significant milestone in China’s maritime industry by delivering a tanker to a Dutch company on Thursday. This achievement makes Waigaoqiao the first shipbuilder in the Chinese mainland to deliver products with a combined carrying capacity of over 100 million tonnes.
The newly delivered vessel is the 579th ship or offshore platform constructed by Waigaoqiao in the 25 years since its founding. Over the past quarter-century, the company has built almost all mainstream ship types and offshore products used in the global shipping market. With a vast network of cooperation partners worldwide, Waigaoqiao has solidified its position as a leader in the shipbuilding industry.
Carrying capacity is a critical measure of a ship’s transportation capabilities and serves as an essential parameter for gauging the construction capacity of shipbuilding enterprises. Waigaoqiao’s landmark accomplishment underscores the significant advancements in China’s shipbuilding sector and its growing influence on the global stage.
In addition to this milestone, Waigaoqiao also constructed China’s first domestically built large cruise ship, Adora Magic City, which made its maiden voyage in 2024. This landmark vessel signifies a new era in China’s high-end shipbuilding capabilities and reflects the country’s emergence as a significant player in the international cruise industry.
