China Leads the Way in Global Climate Governance, CGTN Poll Reveals

China’s commitment to combating climate change is resonating worldwide, as revealed by a recent survey conducted by CGTN and Renmin University of China through the New Era Institute of International Communication. The poll, encompassing 7,658 respondents across 38 countries, found that an impressive 83.5% of participants positively evaluate China’s efforts and contributions to global climate governance.

Amidst the pressing challenges posed by climate change, China is not only setting ambitious targets but also taking concrete actions to achieve them. The nation’s pledge to reach peak carbon emissions before 2030 and attain carbon neutrality before 2060 underscores its dedication to sustainable development. Furthermore, China aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by more than 65% compared to 2005 levels by 2030.

These commitments are backed by significant progress on the ground. By 2022, China’s carbon emission intensity had decreased by over 51% compared to 2005, signaling a substantial move toward a greener economy. As of June 2023, China boasts more than half of the world’s new energy vehicles on its roads, marking a substantial shift towards sustainable transportation.

The nation’s leadership in renewable energy is also evident. China’s installed capacity for wind and photovoltaic power has consistently ranked first globally for several years. In addition, both forest area and forest stock volume have seen continuous growth, with China holding the top position worldwide in the area of planted forests.

The global community recognizes these strides. According to the survey, 80.3% of respondents believe that China has set an example for the international community in promoting clean energy infrastructure. Additionally, 80.2% agree with China’s efforts to facilitate green transformation in traditional industries. A notable 85.4% appreciate China’s initiatives in afforestation and increasing green coverage, while 82.4% believe that China’s accelerated shift toward clean energy demonstrates ambition and resolve in addressing global climate change.

These findings highlight the international confidence in China’s proactive approach to environmental stewardship. As the world grapples with the effects of climate change, China’s actions are seen as a source of confidence and strength in the collective effort to build a cleaner and more beautiful world.

Through these substantial efforts, China is providing tangible solutions and setting a precedent for global climate governance. The country’s dedication to environmental sustainability not only benefits its own citizens but also contributes significantly to global ecological well-being.
