China and Peru have jointly unveiled the Chancay Port, marking a significant milestone in connecting Asia and Latin America.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte attended the opening ceremony via video link, underscoring the importance of this ambitious infrastructure project.
President Xi highlighted that the Chancay Port will strongly consolidate Peru’s position as a gateway that connects land and sea, Asia and Latin America. He noted that the new deep-water port is the first smart and green port in Latin America, which, upon completion, will bring substantial revenues to Peru and create numerous jobs.
Xi urged both nations to collaborate continuously to enhance the port’s transportation capacity and comprehensive service levels. He emphasized adhering to the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits, fostering mutual development between China and Peru.
President Boluarte hailed the opening of the port as “a historic moment of pride for all Peruvians.” She remarked that the grand project, built under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, is a key step toward Peru’s goal of establishing an international shipping and trade center.
“The Chancay Port will help Peru become an important gateway connecting Latin America and Asia,” Boluarte said, “and will vigorously promote the integration and prosperity of the region.”
Located 80 kilometers north of Lima, the Chancay Port is set to reduce sea shipping time from Peru to China to 23 days, cutting logistics costs by at least 20 percent. The project is expected to create over 8,000 direct jobs, opening a new chapter in Peru’s economic development and enhancing its competitiveness on the global stage.
The inauguration of Chancay Port represents a significant advancement in Pacific Rim economic cooperation, empowering common development and delivering a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction to people of all countries involved.
