President Xi Jinping Highlights China-Peru Friendship Ahead of State Visit

In a gesture of goodwill and strengthening ties, President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China has penned a signed article titled “China-Peru Friendship: Setting Sail Toward an Even Brighter Future,” published in the Peruvian newspaper El Peruano on Thursday. The article precedes his eagerly anticipated state visit to the Republic of Peru and attendance at the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

President Xi’s message resonates deeply with the Peruvian people, highlighting the profound historical and cultural connections between the two nations. Drawing parallels between ancient civilizations, he emphasizes the shared wisdom and mutual respect that have long underpinned China-Peru relations.

“This bond of friendship and affection is rooted in the wisdom of our ancient civilizations,” President Xi writes, acknowledging the similarities between the maritime civilizations of Caral and Inca in Peru and China’s own rich heritage. He notes that these connections have fostered a relationship where Peruvians fondly refer to Chinese people as paisano, a term of endearment meaning compatriot.

Highlighting the significance of cultural exchange, President Xi mentions collaborative efforts such as the upcoming premiere of the documentary From the Great Wall to Machu Picchu in Peru, and the screening of popular Chinese films and television series like 3 Body Problem. These initiatives are aimed at deepening mutual understanding and appreciation between the peoples of China and Peru.

The article also underscores the strong economic ties and win-win cooperation that have been a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship. President Xi notes that China has been Peru’s largest trading partner and export market for a decade, with significant Chinese investments contributing to Peru’s GDP and job creation. Projects like the Las Bambas copper mine and infrastructure developments such as the Saúl Garrido Rosillo Hospital and Lima’s water project demonstrate the tangible benefits of this partnership.

A key highlight of President Xi’s message is the upcoming inauguration of Chancay Port, a major project under the Belt and Road Initiative. “Chancay Port is not only an important project under Belt and Road cooperation but also the first smart port in South America,” he states. The port’s completion is expected to enhance connectivity, reduce shipping times between Peru and China, and boost regional development and integration, benefiting economies across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Emphasizing the shared values and mutual aspirations of both nations, President Xi calls for continued collaboration in various fields, including culture, education, scientific research, and tourism. He advocates for stronger people-to-people exchanges to “garner greater public support for our relations,” and proposes joint efforts in global initiatives such as the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.

As the world undergoes significant changes, President Xi urges both countries to uphold true multilateralism and promote an inclusive and equitable global order. “China is ready to join Peru in embracing a broader vision and grasping the underlying trends of our times,” he declares, highlighting the importance of a shared future for mankind.

President Xi concludes his article with a call to action: “On a new historical juncture, China is ready to work hand in hand with our Peruvian friends with one heart and with the same goal and steer the ship of our friendship toward an even brighter future.”

As President Xi’s state visit approaches, both nations anticipate further strengthening of their comprehensive strategic partnership, fostering deeper ties, and exploring new opportunities for collaboration that will benefit their people and contribute to regional and global development.
