Microsoft President: China Rapidly Closing Tech Gap with the West

Lisbon, Portugal — China’s technological advancements are rapidly closing the gap with the West, according to Microsoft’s vice chair and president, Brad Smith. Speaking at the Web Summit tech conference on Tuesday, Smith highlighted China’s significant progress in technology development.

“China is ‘in many ways’ close to or catching up with the U.S. and Europe on technological developments,” Smith told CNBC. “I think one of the dangers, frankly, is that people who don’t go to China too often assume that they’re behind. But when you go there, you’re impressed by how much they’re doing.”

Smith emphasized the importance of recognizing China’s growing capabilities and acknowledged that Chinese and American companies will continue to compete in technology “in the distant future.” He urged U.S. and European companies to collaborate to boost economies and bring innovations like artificial intelligence to the global stage.

The Microsoft president’s remarks shed light on the shifting dynamics of global technological leadership and underscore the need for international cooperation in fostering innovation and economic growth.
