Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport made history on Friday morning as it welcomed its first visa-free inbound passenger, marking the beginning of a new era in China’s international travel policy.
The arrival follows China’s launch of a pilot visa-free policy for ordinary passport holders from nine countries: Slovakia, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, and South Korea. Visitors from these nations can now enter China without a visa for stays up to 15 days.
The new policy aims to boost tourism and strengthen international ties, making it easier for travelers from these countries to explore the diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage of the Chinese mainland.
“This is a significant step forward in promoting cultural exchange and economic cooperation,” said an official at Shenzhen Airport. “We are excited to welcome more international visitors and provide them with a seamless travel experience.”
Travelers have expressed enthusiasm about the new visa-free access. “I’ve always wanted to visit China, and now it’s much more convenient,” said a passenger from Norway arriving on Friday. “I’m looking forward to experiencing the culture and visiting landmarks like the Great Wall.”
Shenzhen, known as a hub for innovation and technology, is expected to see an influx of tourists and business professionals eager to connect with the city’s dynamic environment.
The visa-free policy is part of China’s ongoing efforts to open up and facilitate global engagement. By simplifying entry procedures, China seeks to enhance mutual understanding and foster stronger relationships with countries around the world.
Travelers from the nine countries are encouraged to check the specific entry requirements and ensure their passports are valid for at least six months from the date of entry.
As the policy takes effect, Shenzhen Airport is preparing to accommodate the expected surge in international arrivals, implementing measures to ensure safety and efficiency in processing passengers.
The pilot program will be monitored closely, and if successful, may be expanded to include more countries in the future.
