Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Beijing on Friday, marking a significant moment in the 20th anniversary of the China-Italy comprehensive strategic partnership. The meeting emphasized the deep-rooted connections between two ancient civilizations and their shared commitment to fostering a world of harmonious coexistence.
President Xi highlighted the importance of openness and inclusiveness, urging both nations to encourage the international community to resolve differences through dialogue and cooperation. “China and Italy should uphold their traditions and work together to rise above conflicts,” Xi stated.
As this year also commemorates the 700th anniversary of the death of famed Italian traveler Marco Polo, Xi stressed the need to support language teaching and promote youth exchanges to strengthen cultural ties. He called for deepening cultural exchanges and enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, and environmental fields.
Regarding relations between China and Europe, Xi affirmed China’s view of Europe as an important partner on the path toward Chinese modernization. He urged both sides to seek win-win cooperation and manage differences properly to ensure that bilateral relations become more mature and stable. “China is willing to strengthen cooperation with the European side to cope with global challenges and hopes that Italy can play a positive role in this regard,” Xi said.
President Mattarella, on his state visit at Xi’s invitation, recalled his past visits to China and expressed Italy’s commitment to friendship with China. He affirmed Italy’s support for the one-China principle and expressed eagerness to enhance collaboration in culture and education.
Following the talks, the leaders witnessed the signing of agreements on cultural and educational cooperation, further solidifying the partnership between the two nations. President Xi hosted a banquet in honor of President Mattarella, symbolizing the warmth and depth of China-Italy relations.
