Xi Jinping Hails Cultural Bridges at Inaugural World Conference of Classics

In a landmark moment for global cultural exchange, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a heartfelt congratulatory letter to the inaugural World Conference of Classics, which opened in Beijing on Thursday. The conference, co-organized by China and Greece under the theme “Classical Civilizations and the Modern World“, serves as a new platform for fostering dialogue and mutual learning among ancient civilizations.

“Over two millennia ago, the ancient civilizations of China and Greece flourished at opposite ends of the Eurasian continent, laying the foundation for the development of human civilization,” President Xi remarked in his letter. He highlighted the significance of preserving and advancing cultural heritage, expressing China’s commitment to enhancing international people-to-people exchanges and promoting global dialogues among civilizations.

President Xi emphasized that China is ready to work with other nations to implement the Global Civilization Initiative, addressing shared challenges facing humanity and promoting the advancement of human civilization. He called upon experts and scholars to embrace the responsibility of advancing classical studies, contributing to the preservation and development of civilizations, and enhancing their exchanges and mutual learning.

The opening ceremony saw Li Shulei, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and head of the Publicity Department, reading out President Xi’s letter. A congratulatory letter from Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou was also shared with attendees, reflecting the joint efforts of China and Greece in promoting cultural dialogue. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay sent a written address, underlining the global importance of the conference’s mission.

Drawing over 600 participants from around the world, the conference brought together experts, scholars, cultural figures, youth representatives, and media professionals. The gathering symbolizes a collective endeavor to bridge the past and the present, exploring how classical civilizations can inform and enrich the modern world.

The World Conference of Classics represents a significant step in international cooperation, strengthening ties between nations through shared appreciation of ancient wisdom. As civilizations continue to interact and learn from one another, such initiatives pave the way for a more interconnected and understanding global community.
