Italian President Sergio Mattarella arrived in Beijing on Thursday, embarking on a six-day state visit to China aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and commemorating historical milestones between the two nations.
Upon his arrival, President Mattarella visited the Summer Palace, China’s largest imperial garden and a symbol of the country’s rich cultural heritage. The visit underscores the importance of cultural exchange in the relationship between Italy and China.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Italy comprehensive strategic partnership. The two countries have been working closely to enhance cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
The visit also coincides with the 700th anniversary of the death of Marco Polo, the renowned Italian explorer who journeyed to China along the ancient Silk Road over seven centuries ago. His travels laid the foundation for centuries of exchange and mutual understanding between East and West.
Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, expressed China’s readiness to work with Italy to expand practical cooperation and people-to-people exchanges. “China is ready to work with Italy to deepen mutual trust and cooperation,” Mao said during a regular press briefing on Tuesday.
President Mattarella’s visit is expected to include meetings with Chinese leaders to discuss ways to further enhance the strategic partnership. This is his second state visit to China, following his previous visit in February 2017.
The six-day visit is anticipated to reaffirm the longstanding friendship between Italy and China, paving the way for future collaboration and shared prosperity.
