Singapore — Chinese athletes made a strong start at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Singapore on Thursday, securing one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal on the first day of competition.
Qin Haiyang emerged victorious in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke final, touching the wall in 55.61 seconds. His time matched the World Cup record for the event and edged out Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus and Caspar Corbeau of the Netherlands. Shymanovich took silver with a time of 55.72 seconds, while Corbeau claimed bronze in 56.67 seconds.
In the women’s events, Yang Junxuan and Yu Yiting added two silver medals for China. Yang finished second in the women’s 50-meter freestyle final, clocking 23.89 seconds, just 0.66 seconds behind gold medalist Katarzyna Wasick of Poland. Siobhan Bernadette Haughey of Hong Kong, China, secured the bronze with a time of 24.00 seconds.
Yu Yiting put up a strong fight in the women’s 100-meter medley final but was edged out by Kate Douglass of the United States. Douglass finished first in 56.57 seconds, 0.87 seconds ahead of Yu. Beata Nelson, also from the U.S., took bronze with a time of 57.53 seconds.
Douglass continued her dominant performance by setting a new world record in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke, finishing in 2:12.72. She surpassed silver medalist Alina Zmushka of Belarus and bronze medalist Tara Kinder of Britain.
China’s Pan Zhanle earned a bronze medal in the men’s 400-meter freestyle, completing the race in 3:38.79. The gold went to Britain’s Duncan Scott, who finished in 3:34.46, while Kieran Smith of the U.S. took silver with a time of 3:36.97.
The Chinese team looks to build on their strong start as the World Cup continues in Singapore.
