President Xi Jinping met on Friday with Sam Hou Fai, the incoming chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), underscoring the central authorities’ wholehearted support for Macao’s development. A spokesperson for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of China’s State Council highlighted that the meeting demonstrates the earnest expectations of the central authorities for Macao to continue advancing the successful practice of the “one country, two systems” principle.
The spokesperson noted that the thriving environment in Macao today serves as a vivid testament to the vitality and strength of the “one country, two systems” framework. During the meeting, President Xi reiterated the central authorities’ commitment to fully and faithfully implementing this principle, under which the people of Macao administer Macao with a high degree of autonomy.
“This commitment constitutes the greatest source of confidence for securing the steady and continued success of ‘one country, two systems’ in Macao,” the spokesperson stated. The central authorities believe that the new chief executive and government of the Macao SAR will unite all sectors of Macao society and continually break new ground in practicing “one country, two systems” with Macao characteristics.
