Typhoon Kong-rey to Make Landfall on Taiwan Island; Chinese Mainland Prepares

Typhoon Kong-rey, the 21st typhoon of this year, is expected to make landfall along the eastern coast of Taiwan island between noon and evening on Thursday. According to the China Meteorological Administration, the typhoon will gradually shift northeast towards the Chinese mainland, specifically affecting the coastal areas of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian provinces, and Shanghai.

Shanghai is bracing for significant rainfall ranging from 120 to 180 millimeters, with maximum hourly precipitation reaching 40 to 70 millimeters. This could mark the most extreme November rainfall in the city since 1981.

The meteorological agency of the Taiwan region issued a land warning early Wednesday morning. Extremely heavy rain or torrential rain advisories are in effect from Wednesday evening through early Thursday for mountainous areas of Yilan and Hualien counties.

Hualien is forecasted to receive over 900 millimeters of rainfall on Thursday, the highest expected across the entire island.

In response to the approaching typhoon, multiple airlines have announced delays, rescheduling, or cancellations of international flights to and from Taiwan.
