Young Indonesian Artist Captures China’s Spirit in “10 Things about China”

What comes to mind when you think of China? For nine-year-old Jeanette Fay Gunawan from Indonesia, it’s a vibrant tapestry of places, delicious food, and rich cultural legends.

With markers, black ink, and watercolors on A3 paper, Jeanette brought her top ten symbols of China to life in an artwork titled “10 Things about China.” Her vivid depiction includes baozi (steamed buns), fragrant tea, pandas munching on bamboo, the legendary Chinese dragon, the Moon Goddess Chang’e with her Jade Rabbit, the Great Wall, glowing red lanterns, and blooming plum flowers—each element capturing the essence of Chinese culture.

Jeanette’s heartfelt portrayal earned her the Third Prize in the “China Through My Eyes” Global Children’s Art Project. This international competition celebrates young artists who express their unique perspectives on China through art.

Her achievement not only showcases her artistic talent but also highlights the power of cultural exchange. Through the eyes of a child, we are reminded of the shared connections that transcend borders and bring us closer together.
