8-Year-Old American Girl Wins Art Prize with Mid-Autumn Festival Painting

Last year, eight-year-old Sky Lu from the United States experienced the Mid-Autumn Festival in China for the first time. “I celebrated a special holiday in China—the Mid-Autumn Festival,” she shared. “I ate mooncakes, saw a big, round moon, and listened to my grandmother tell beautiful stories and legends about the festival.”

Inspired by her cherished memories, Sky used markers and her imagination to create a vibrant painting depicting herself “as a princess celebrating a beautiful Mid-Autumn Festival in China.”

Her artwork stood out among many entries, earning her the Third Prize in the “China Through My Eyes” Global Children’s Art Project.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a significant traditional celebration in China and across Asia. It is a time for family reunions, moon gazing, and enjoying mooncakes—a symbolic pastry filled with various sweet or savory ingredients.

Sky’s heartfelt portrayal of the festival highlights how cultural experiences can transcend borders, bringing people together through shared traditions. Her perspective offers a glimpse into the festival’s joyous spirit and its importance in Chinese culture.

Congratulations to Sky Lu for her artistic achievement, and for sharing her unique view of China’s Mid-Autumn Festival with the world.
