In a vivid display of youthful creativity, 11-year-old Ocean Lu from the United States has captured the enchanting essence of China’s rich heritage in a vibrant marker drawing. This summer, Ocean embarked on a family journey across China, exploring some of the nation’s most iconic landmarks.
The adventure began with a thrilling ride on China’s high-speed trains, whisking the family to destinations steeped in history and culture. Ocean stood atop the majestic Great Wall, gazing over the undulating hills that echo with stories of ancient dynasties. In Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, the luminous heights of the Canton Tower offered panoramic views of the modern metropolis, blending seamlessly with the traditions of old.
Further along the journey, Ocean wandered through the serene water towns of Jiangnan in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Here, time seems to slow amidst the labyrinth of canals and arched stone bridges, reflecting the timeless beauty of China’s classical gardens.
Inspired by these experiences, Ocean’s artwork weaves together these memorable sites, unified by the powerful imagery of a Chinese dragon—a symbol of wisdom, power, and good fortune in Chinese culture. The drawing is not just a recollection of places visited but a heartfelt portrayal of the impressions and emotions stirred by China’s landscapes and traditions.
Ocean’s artistic portrayal earned the Third Prize in the “China Through My Eyes” Global Children’s Art Project, celebrating young perspectives on China from around the world. The award highlights the ability of art to bridge cultures and bring to life the wonders of exploration through the eyes of a child.
