In a strong response to recent developments, a spokesperson for the Chinese mainland emphasized on Sunday that activities advocating for “Taiwan independence” and external interference will not deter Beijing’s resolve to address the Taiwan question and achieve national reunification.
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made these remarks following reports of a new arms sales agreement between the United States and Taiwan region.
“We firmly oppose U.S. arms sales to China’s Taiwan region, which has been our consistent and clear stance,” Zhu stated. She urged the United States to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. Joint Communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique of 1982. Zhu called on Washington to cease arms dealings with Taiwan and stop sending erroneous signals to separatist forces seeking “Taiwan independence.”
The spokesperson reiterated that efforts by separatist forces and external parties will not weaken the mainland’s determination to achieve national reunification. “The Taiwan question is an internal affair of China,” she added, “and no foreign interference will be tolerated.”
The latest U.S. arms sales plan to Taiwan has heightened tensions in the region, drawing criticism from Beijing. China views Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and opposes any form of official exchanges or military cooperation between Taiwan and other countries.
Analysts note that the U.S.’s continued arms sales to Taiwan undermine regional stability and complicate cross-strait relations. The Chinese mainland has repeatedly called for peaceful reunification while reserving the right to take necessary measures against separatist activities.
