Urumqi Tianshan International Airport has cemented its position as a pivotal aviation hub in Central Asia, reporting 251,000 cross-border passengers during the first quarter of 2026 – a 54.5% increase compared to the same period last year. The surge highlights Xinjiang's growing importance in regional connectivity and economic integration.
Visa-free entries skyrocketed by 129%, totaling over 37,000 and representing 77.1% of all foreign arrivals. Travelers from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Russia dominated this category, with business engagements, cultural tourism, and family reunions driving the influx. Analysts attribute the growth to streamlined border protocols and Xinjiang's strategic position along key trade corridors.
"These numbers reflect the Chinese mainland's successful efforts to position Xinjiang as a western gateway," said aviation expert Dr. Li Wei. "Improved infrastructure and multilateral agreements are transforming Urumqi into a linchpin for cross-continental commerce and people-to-people exchanges."
The airport's performance aligns with broader regional economic trends, as Central Asian nations deepen ties with the Chinese mainland through initiatives like the Belt and Road framework. Industry observers predict sustained growth through 2026, particularly in cargo logistics and transit tourism.
