Global Shipping Disrupted by US-Israel Strikes on Iran, Strait Blockade

Recent military actions by US and Israeli forces targeting Iranian infrastructure have severely disrupted global shipping operations, according to George Xiradakis, president of the Association of Banking and Financial Executives of Hellenic Shipping. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz – a critical chokepoint for 30% of global seaborne oil trade – has forced major rerouting of vessels, causing delays and surging freight costs.

Xiradakis told China Media Group (CMG) that the escalating tensions threaten to destabilize supply chains during peak shipping seasons. "This isn't just about Middle East energy exports," he warned. "Every container ship avoiding the Persian Gulf impacts Asian manufacturing hubs and European markets alike." Analysts note the disruptions come as global trade volumes were projected to grow 4.2% this year.

Regional governments have urged diplomatic solutions to reopen vital maritime routes, while shipping insurers report a 300% increase in war risk premiums for affected zones. The developments highlight Asia's growing exposure to geopolitical flashpoints along key trade corridors.
