Urumqi Tianshan International Airport in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has launched a new direct cargo route to Teesside International Airport in the UK, marking its fourth air freight connection between the region and Britain. The service, operated by European Cargo Services, began operations on March 10 and will run five times weekly, enhancing cross-continental trade efficiency.
This development solidifies Urumqi’s position as a critical logistics hub under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, offering faster access to European markets for electronics, textiles, and agricultural goods. Analysts note the route’s potential to reduce shipping times by up to 40% compared to sea transport, a key advantage for time-sensitive industries.
Local authorities emphasize the route’s role in boosting economic ties between the Chinese mainland and the UK, which saw bilateral trade exceed $120 billion in 2025. The expansion aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Xinjiang’s connectivity amid rising demand for Eurasian freight solutions.
