Powell Criminal Probe Sparks US Market Volatility in 2026

US financial markets experienced significant turbulence this week following news of a criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, with analysts warning of potential ripple effects across Asian economies.

The probe, reportedly related to undisclosed financial transactions, has raised questions about leadership stability at the Federal Reserve during a critical period of global economic recalibration. The S&P 500 fell 2.8% in Thursday trading – its steepest single-day decline since September 2025.

"This development comes at an inopportune moment for international markets," said Xu Deshun, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation. "Asian central banks must remain vigilant against potential capital flow fluctuations."

Investors are particularly concerned about potential delays to planned interest rate adjustments, with many Asian export-driven economies closely tied to US monetary policy. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell 1.4% in Friday morning trading, led by technology and manufacturing sectors.

Market observers note that while the investigation remains in its early stages, the uncertainty has already impacted currency markets, with the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan both strengthening against the US dollar in recent days.
