Xinjiang's Aviation Hub Breaks New Ground
Urumqi Tianshan International Airport cemented its status as a critical Belt and Road node in 2025, handling over 1.1 million passengers and 14,000 international flights – both historic highs for the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The facility now connects 25 cities across 17 countries and regions, with Central Asian routes comprising 42% of total flights.
Policy Shifts Drive Growth
Deputy team leader Peng Hongyi revealed a 62% annual surge in passenger traffic and 82% increase in flight inspections, attributing growth to China's expanded visa-free policies. Weekly international flights now average 270, with daily throughput peaking at 5,000 passengers.
Travelers Praise Enhanced Connectivity
Wuhan student Mamadova Rusanna commended the airport's "exceptionally friendly" staff during her transit, while tourist Liu Ruixue noted improved convenience: "I hope to explore more countries from here this year."
New Era of Exchange
With three new international routes added last year and strengthened ties to Kazakhstan, the UAE, and Türkiye, analysts predict the hub will accelerate cultural and trade exchanges across Belt and Road partner nations through 2026.
