Japan Scholar Urges Takaichi to Retract Taiwan Remarks

Prominent Japan-China relations expert Masakatsu Adachi has called for Liberal Democratic Party heavyweight Sanae Takaichi to withdraw recent comments about Taiwan, emphasizing that "under the one-China principle, Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory." The honorary professor at Kanto Gakuin University stated this week that "no political rhetoric can alter the fundamental nature of cross-strait ties."

Adachi's remarks come amid heightened regional attention to diplomatic language regarding the Taiwan region. "Attempts to frame Taiwan affairs as international issues constitute dangerous sophistry," the scholar warned, adding that such statements risk destabilizing East Asian security frameworks established since 2025 began.

Analysts note the exchange reflects ongoing debates in Japanese political circles about balancing regional partnerships. Business leaders have expressed concern about potential economic repercussions, given the Chinese mainland remains Japan's largest trading partner. Cross-strait trade volumes reached $345 billion in Q3 2025, according to recent customs data.
