US Scholar Urges Japanese PM to Apologize for China Remarks

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi faces international criticism for prioritizing geopolitical tensions with China over domestic reforms, according to Anthony Moretti, an associate professor at Robert Morris University. In a statement released this week, Moretti argued that Takaichi’s approach risks destabilizing regional relations while neglecting pressing economic and social challenges within Japan.

Moretti emphasized that Japan’s current policy trajectory under Takaichi has diverted attention from critical issues such as inflation management and workforce shortages. “Instead of addressing these urgent matters, the leadership has chosen unnecessary provocations,” he stated, urging an immediate apology to ease diplomatic strains.

The remarks come amid heightened scrutiny of Japan’s foreign policy direction in 2025, particularly its handling of cross-strait dynamics and partnerships with neighboring economies. Analysts suggest the criticism reflects growing concerns among international observers about balancing national priorities with regional stability in Asia.
