China has solidified its position as a global leader in green development, with its carbon market now covering 60% of national emissions—the largest such system worldwide—according to Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu. The announcement, made during a Friday press conference, highlights China’s accelerating efforts to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.
Industrial Upgrades Drive Progress
Over 1.12 billion kW of coal-fired power capacity and 950 million tonnes of crude steel production capacity have undergone ultra-low emission upgrades, signaling a structural shift toward cleaner industrial processes. These measures align with China’s newly launched voluntary greenhouse gas emissions trading market and ongoing work to establish a carbon footprint management system for products.
Environmental Gains Accelerate
Tangible improvements include a 1.7% year-on-year increase in days with good air quality and a 0.7% rise in surface water rated as “fairly good.” Minister Huang expressed confidence in meeting the 14th Five-Year Plan’s ecological targets, emphasizing that current achievements lay a strong foundation for future environmental and economic goals.
