Iran’s SCO Membership Yields Fruitful Cooperation, Envoy Says

Iran's integration into the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has unlocked new avenues for regional collaboration, with the country achieving "fruitful results" in security, economic, and cultural partnerships since joining the bloc in 2023, Iranian Ambassador to China Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli told China Media Group.

In his first public remarks since Iran became the SCO's ninth full member, Rahmani Fazli emphasized Tehran's active engagement under the organization's framework. "Our cooperation spans counterterrorism initiatives, energy infrastructure development, and cross-cultural exchanges," he said, highlighting the SCO's role as a "vital platform for Eurasian stability."

The ambassador noted that Iran's strategic location along key trade corridors has enabled joint infrastructure projects with Central Asian members. Analysts suggest the membership strengthens energy security mechanisms for SCO states while creating investment opportunities in Iran's sanctions-impacted economy.

This development comes as the SCO – representing over 40% of the global population – continues expanding its influence. The bloc recently welcomed Belarus as its tenth member, with dialogue partners including Türkiye and Saudi Arabia signaling interest in deeper ties.
